About the Award
This was a new award category for 2017, sponsored by
Destin Solutions Ltd.
The call for submissions stated:
With this award we are looking for examples of best practice in
obtaining or using information to support your empty homes work.
This could include best practice in how you collect information about empty homes or their owners, how you process it or protect it, your internal or external partnerships and ways of working ... and so on.
Destin were keen to sponsor the award in order to underscore their commitment to developing solutions for the field of empty homes work. Destin is currently seeking a partner for a project to develop solutions to support an empty homes team carrying out data cleansing as part of the CTB exercise, as reported in our story
here.
The Award submissions
Most of the submissions focused on group processes such as regular forums or regular meetings of officers. This had some echoes of North Norfolk’s winning submission last year which had highlighted the work of the Enforcement Board there.
In the event, Destin Solutions selected as the winning entry an example of a particularly focused and systematic approach to collecting, analysing and disseminating information, giving the award to
David Sanderson (Empty Property Officer)/ Carlisle City Council and member of the EHN Executive, seen below (left) with Duncan Baxter, Managing Director of Destin.

Tracking and promoting grant scheme
D. Sanderson, Empty Property Officer, Carlisle City Council
In Nov 2013 I was appointed to deliver £255k Empty Homes Cluster Grant Funding. I set up a password protected Excel tracker sheet as the information contained sensitive information such as applicants’ financial details. I added property details, marketing information, statutory approvals & certification, grants approved, stage and final payments, building component details, time elapsed & time available. I gathered any valuable outcomes from my interventions such as the number of people housed, carbon savings, jobs created and business generated into local economy.
After each intervention or action, I updated the spreadsheet in real time. I created a summary for on-the-spot monitoring of progress & budget and was able to instantly produce reports for Performance Board, SMT & DCLG.
Finally I created a simple infographic to summarise the outcomes and benefits of the grants.
Destin’s offer
Please don’t overlook Destin’s search for a partner to improve CTB data-cleansing outcomes. This is a genuine offer that could have major benefits by increasing the amount of NHB earned by empty homes teams.
