The Empty Homes Network has welcomed news of a pioneering partnership that will see Carlisle's historic Bitts Park Lodge restored and brought back into use after standing empty for more than a decade.
Announced by Cumberland Council, the project brings together the Council, Story Contracting, Story Homes, Carlisle College and Habitat for Humanity Great Britain in a collaborative effort to restore the flood-damaged building and explore its future as a community asset, potentially including a café and community hub. The initiative is also set to provide valuable hands-on construction experience for local students while demonstrating how underused buildings can be transformed through partnership working.
The Empty Homes Network is pleased to have played a small part in helping bring together organisations and individuals with a shared commitment to tackling vacancy and finding innovative solutions for long-term empty properties.
Adam Cliff, Executive Director of the Empty Homes Network, said:
"This is exactly the kind of creative partnership that can make a real difference to communities. Bringing together local government, education, the private sector and charitable organisations demonstrates what can be achieved when people work collaboratively towards a common goal.
"We are delighted to have played a small role in helping foster connections and conversations that have contributed to this project moving forward. Bitts Park Lodge has stood empty for many years, and it is fantastic to see such a positive and practical approach being taken to secure its future."
