Government launches empty homes premium exceptions consultation

Latest news
July 19, 2023

Central government, and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, has launched a consultation into the Council Tax Premium charged on empty and proposed second homes, with a view to understanding where exceptions to the premiums should be applied.

Proposing a number of circumstances where this should be applied, the government is seeking views from across all sectors, with it likely to impact the incentives, and disincentives, on offer to empty and second home owners.

These proposals relate to local authorities in England only.

The consultation documents, as well as the opportunity to provide a direct response, can be viewed using the link below. The consultation closes on the 31st August, 2023.

The Empty Homes Network will be submitting a formal response to the consultation, which will be available to view at a later date in our information library.
