Empty Homes Conference a big success

The National Empty Homes Conference held in Birmingham on 29th May proved a great success. In addition to the full programme, delegates were able to hear Andrew Stunell MP - our "Minister for Empty Homes" - announce significant funding allocations. The Minister went on to present the Grafton UK Ltd. Empty Homes Practitioner of the Year Award, won by Keith Shields of South Tyneside. The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 received royal assent on 1st May as a consequence of which squatting of residential property will become a criminal offence as of 1st September 2012. The penalties for breaking the law include up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to £5,000.
